In connection with King Oscar II and Queen Sophie’s silver anniversary in 1882, money was collected for a gift from the Norwegian people, and the gift committee decided upon presenting the king and queen with a collection of national works of art. A public competition was announced for Norwegian artists, the first such competition in the Norwegian art world.
The silver anniversary gift consists of both paintings and sculptures and showcases a wide-ranging and representative selection of art from the 1880s. Artists such as Hans Gude, Christian Krohg, Fritz Thaulow, and Harriet Backer will be represented in the exhibition.
