The Silver Anniversary Gift 1882

The theme for the exhibition in Tromsø is the gifts from the people to King Oscar and Queen Sophie for their silver anniversary in 1882.

In connection with King Oscar II and Queen Sophie’s silver anniversary in 1882, money was collected for a gift from the Norwegian people, and the gift committee decided upon presenting the king and queen with a collection of national works of art. A public competition was announced for Norwegian artists, the first such competition in the Norwegian art world.

The silver anniversary gift consists of both paintings and sculptures and showcases a wide-ranging and representative selection of art from the 1880s. Artists such as Hans Gude, Christian Krohg, Fritz Thaulow, and Harriet Backer will be represented in the exhibition.
